Wildlife ponds can be glamorous in almost any garden and is always encouraged to have one. There’s nothing better than sitting back, relaxing and listening to the flow of water and birds after a long hard day at work.
Why clean a wildlife pond?
Most people are under the impression that you can just fill a hole with water and leave it be. In most cases this is fine. Its essential to have moving water which will oxygenate the water, stop it going stagnant and smelling. More importantly, you have to keep the water health for the wildlife other wise this can cause health problems for them and cause them to leave the pond. Because wildlife ponds get left they are notorious for becoming very dirty very quick. With the lack of water movement with this sludge, it can cause the water to smell making the pond less attractive to you and the coming wildlife.
How we cleaned the pond
Cleaning wildlife ponds can be one of the harder tasks we do. They are often neglected because of the wrong information the customer has received previously. Wildlife ponds often have either frogspawn, tadpoles or frogs, so these have to be removed carefully which can take time. We started by removing the tadpoles and frogs from the pond and putting them in a well oxygenated pool. Once the wildlife was out we could drain the pond using a high powered pond pump and then finished it off with a specialist pond vacuum.
All the sludge was removed manually along with the over grown lily’s and was put in the garden waste recycle bin. The pond vac did the rest of the cleaning on the base of the pond. Although pebbles look great in wildlife ponds they can cause problems with trapping debris which makes it even harder to clean. We use a riddle for this which makes cleaning off the debris easier.
